There was a "huge explosion" in Moscow. Russian Defense Ministry shot down a Ukrainian drone.
BEIJING, August 18 (Xinhua)-According to foreign media reports, in the early morning of the 18th local time, there was a "huge explosion" in the center of Moscow, the Russian capital. Later, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that Russian air defense forces shot down a Ukrainian drone over Moscow, which caused some damage to the building of the Moscow World Expo Center.
According to reports, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that the Ukrainian side launched the attack at 4 am local time on the 18th, targeting Moscow. The news pointed out that after the drone was discovered by air defense weapons, it changed its flight route and fell on a non-residential building in downtown Moscow.
Sobyanin, mayor of Moscow, said that "the wreckage of the drone landed in the central area of the Expo and did not cause major damage to the building". He said that rescuers arrived at the scene quickly, and there was no news of casualties.
The report quoted Itar-Tass as saying that a wall of the Expo Center Pavilion partially collapsed, with an area of about 30 square meters.
Reuters reported that after the explosion, a witness at the scene said that he heard a "huge explosion", and almost the whole business center could hear the explosion. According to reports, the Expo Center is a large space for holding large-scale exhibitions, less than 5 kilometers away from the Kremlin.
In addition, the airspace near Vnukovo airport in Moscow was temporarily closed and some flights were delayed.
The Ukrainian side has no response to this.
